What to Wear for Senior Photos: Start With What She Already Loves

If she lives in oversized sweaters, an oversized sweater is the right call. If she has one dress she feels unstoppable in, that dress is the answer, doesn’t matter what the color wheel says. The goal was never a magazine spread. It was her, on the day she looked most like herself.

Colors that hold up, without erasing her.

Solid colors and soft textures photograph best. Big logos and busy patterns pull focus from her face, and that’s the one thing every photo should be about.

Do reach for jewel tones, warm neutrals, and colors that show up in nature around us, sand, sky, greenery.
Don’t default to all black or all white. Both flatten out detail and drain the life from a photo.
Do bring one statement piece if it’s really her, a jacket, boots, a piece of jewelry that means something.
Don’t buy something new just because it’s trending. If she’s never worn it before today, she won’t feel like herself in it today either.

Match the outfit to the location, not the other way around.

Downtown murals and brick alleys call for something with a little edge, structure, a bit of attitude. Golden hour on the beach wants movement, flowy fabric that catches the wind. Myakka’s oak canopies and prairie light pair beautifully with something soft and a little wild, similar to the location itself.

Bring at least one outfit you can actually move in.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: the best photos almost never happen standing still. They happen mid-laugh, mid-spin, sitting cross-legged on a curb, climbing onto a rock. If your outfit can’t handle any of that, neither can your photos. A dress you can’t sit down in becomes a dress you can only stand in, and that’s a lot of the session gone before we even start.

So bring at least one look you could sit on the ground in, run in, climb into a car in, without a second thought. Ideally two: one dress, one jeans-or-shorts-and-top combo. If there’s a shorter, more fitted piece you’re not willing to leave home without, bring it too, we can absolutely work it in. Just know it’ll limit how many of those big, playful, in-motion shots we can get, so it works best as a smaller part of the mix, not the whole outfit lineup.

One caveat that always applies: if she never wears dresses, this isn’t the day to start. Comfortable and confident beats “supposed to” every single time.

A few practical things that matter more than people expect.

Wrinkle-free and lint-free, genuinely, this one’s bigger than it sounds. Steam or iron the night before, and don’t pack anything in a bag where it’ll end up in a ball. Bring the right undergarments for whatever you’re wearing (nude, seamless, whatever disappears under the fabric). Little things, but they’re the difference between a photo you love and a photo you’re distracted by every time you look at it.

The real rule: if she doesn’t feel like herself in it, we don’t shoot in it.
