So, here’s the thing. We’ve lived in Sarasota for about a year. But moving is hard, and when you work from home, meeting people doesn’t always come easy. I had heard about Gloria Musicae, a professional choir here in Sarasota, and knew I wanted to audition. I’m a singer, it’s such a huge part of who I am. But I’m also a bit of an introvert, so putting myself out there can be a little scary. I’ve learned over the years that when I force myself to do scary things, like sing for strangers and then offer to take their photos, the outcome is usually pretty amazing. I count myself doubly blessed for walking into that audition last May. Not only am I now singing with Gloria Musicae, but I also met the amazing and vivacious Nicole who also sings with “GM” (as all the cool kids call it). Turns out we live just about around the corner from each other. I was really happy when she suggested we carpool. I got to know her a bit better and got the inside scoop on some pretty exciting things she has in the works. When she asked me about taking some headshots for her, I could hardly contain my excitement.

This past Saturday, I met Nicole and her littles at the Selby Botanical Gardens. What a magical place! When I look at Nicole, I see a truly amazing, strong, beautiful woman and mom.

She is full of love and grace and joy. This is how her children see her. This is how I see her. This is how the world sees her. Exactly as they should. A Phenomenal Woman.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can’t touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them,

They say they still can’t see.

I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing,

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need for my care.
